Northumberland cosmetic producers and retailers must register by end of the month

If you manufacture and sell cosmetics in the UK, or if you bring cosmetics into the country from outside the UK there are important changes in the law and you need to take action now.
The Office of Product Safety and Standards has launched a portal requiring all manufacturers of cosmetics available on the UK market to register their products. If you import products from outside the UK you are also required to ensure they are logged onto the portal. Failure to register products in this way is a criminal offence.
Northumberland has a number of smaller scale cosmetic producers and Northumberland County Council’s Trading Standards Service is urging them to submit their products onto the portal by the 31st of March 2021.
A cosmetic is termed as a product that can be applied to the skin, hair or nails and therefore includes small local producers of for example soap, body lotions and herbal balms and shampoos.
The entry is free and has been brought about as these businesses can no longer register on the European portal following Brexit.
Darin Wilson, Business Compliance and Public Safety Unit Manager at Northumberland County Council said:
“We would encourage all qualifying businesses to make sure they are signed up and if you need any advice and guidance, please do not hesitate to contact our Trading Standards Service.
“The records are necessary for safety purposes so that central authorities can monitor what is on the market. ”
